Teaching Kids to SPELL ebook by Becky SpenceTeaching Kids to Spell

Enough said. Just reading those words may make your hair stand on end or send shivers up your spine. For some, teaching kids to spell ranks right up there with teaching kids to write or getting a root canal. Teaching kids to spell can also conjure up lots of questions, such as:

  • Is spelling instruction even important?
  • If so, what words do I teach?
  • Should I let my child misspell words…ever?
  • Why does my child misspell words, even after he’s learned them?
  • What should spelling instruction look like?
  • How do I teach spelling effectively?
  • Is it phonics or is it sight words?
  • What kind of spelling instruction does my struggling reader need?

Teaching Kids to Spell: A Developmental Approach to Spelling by Becky Spence

I am very excited to announce the launch of my new ebook (PDF file), Teaching Kids to Spell: A Developmental Approach to Spelling. I believe spelling is probably one of the most misunderstood topics within literacy. I certainly did not understand it when I first started teaching in the classroom. But after being introduced to a developmental approach to spelling and teaching through the lens of this model with all kinds of students, it clicked for me and for my students (including my own children). Please note: The intended audience for this book is parents, but teachers and tutors could also benefit from the information in it. My own understanding of spelling development deepened as I was writing it.

Topics Covered in Teaching Kids to Spell

Table of Contents to Teaching Kids to Spell by Becky SpenceYou can look through the Table of Contents from my book (see above) and read through some of my descriptions below to get an idea of what you’ll find inside:

  • Debunking some of the myths about misspellings, such as “Something is wrong because my child cannot spell as well as he can read.”
  • Understanding WHY kids misspell words
  • Spelling Development- How do spellers progress in their understanding of the alphabet, phonics, and word meanings?
  • Invented Spelling– What is it? Is it okay? When is it NOT okay? Does it serve a purpose?
  • Spelling Strategies- Strategies to teach spellers in every stage of spelling, including ideas such as: stretching out words and writing the sounds the child hears, studying word patterns or chunks, visualizing words, and studying word meanings as they relate to spelling.
  • Sight Words- What are they? How important are they? Ways to hold kids accountable to the sight words you have taught.
  • Hands-On Spelling Ideas for teaching the alphabet and phonics patterns (There are over 100 ideas in this chapter!)
  • Exceptional Products and and Resources for Teaching Spelling- I’ve included a ton of resources and products to help teach spelling to your child.
  • An appendix containing many practical charts and printables to guide you through the process of teaching kids to spell. {You can download this Printable Resource Pack for teaching spelling by subscribing to This Reading Mama via email!}

So, if teaching kids to spell sends shivers up your spine or makes your hair stand on end, you will WANT to read this book! I KNOW you will find practical ideas for teaching your own kids to spell. Not in the traditional way of drills, worksheets and Friday testing, but in meaningful, hands-on, and developmentally appropriate ways.

Want to discover developmentally appropriate and hands-on ways to teach spelling? Then purchase your copy today for just $3.99.

Reading the Alphabet button-new400

Please note: Reading the Alphabet was designed for children who already know their letters and letters sounds. If your child still needs to work on learning letters and their sounds, Learning the Alphabet will be a better fit for your child.

What is Reading the Alphabet? It’s a hands-on way to get your child reading. Does your child know most of her letters and letter sounds? Maybe she’s too young for Kindergarten curriculum just yet. Does your child have special needs and a reading curriculum that moves at a deeper and slower pace would fit him/her? Reading the Alphabet is built on my experience with teaching emergent and struggling readers as well as my studies of what young readers need to be successful readers.

Reading the Alphabet Targets these Reading Skills:

  • recognizing and making rhymes
  • counting and blending syllables
  • phonics and reinforcing letter sounds, applied to reading
  • beginning sight words (26 beginning sight words are introduced, one with each letter)
  • print awareness
  • matching voice to print
  • reading and sounding out early CVC words such as mat, hot, or bug
  • fine motor skills, such as lacing, tracing, and cutting
  • beginning handwriting for upper and lower case letters

Reading the Alphabet also contains math activities that correlate with each letter of the alphabet, including

  • one-to-one correspondence
  • number recognition 1-20
  • making patterns
  • beginning addition

In this bundled pack ($10), you’ll find these extra goodies:

How to Choose "Just Right" Books: Helping Kids Grow as Readers by Becky Spence

I’m so excited to share with you that my first ebook is HERE! (Please note this is a PDF file.) It’s called How to Choose “Just Right” Books: Helping Kids Grow as Readers (Purchase link is at the end of this blog post). Throughout my journey of blogging, I have been asked a lot of questions about reading. “How do I know if a book is just right for my reader?” ranks within my top 10 for sure. The answer to this question is a lot more complicated than the common five finger rule, especially for reluctant or struggling readers! So I’ve taken the information I learned while getting my M.Ed. in Elementary Reading, my experience as a classroom teacher and private reading tutor of struggling readers, and the experience I’ve had over the last four years with my own young readers at home and bundled it all up in one place! Whew!

In How to Choose “Just Right” Books, you will find:

  • the theory behind and importance of “just right” books, explained without all the teacher words
  • factors that determine “just right” texts
  • practical tips for determining the grade level of a book
  • creative ideas and texts for older struggling readers
  • how to make observations as a child reads aloud
  • helpful hints for asking comprehension questions
  • how to put it all together to discover that “just right” book level

You can view the general topics below:

General topics from each chapter of How to Choose "Just Right" Books by Becky Spence

1-2-3 SPELL IT!~ A Short Vowel Spelling Game | This Reading MamaIf you’ve played our free 1-2-3 FLIP IT! with your child, you will be excited to use 1-2-3 SPELL IT! It’s a bit more challenging than 1-2-3 FLIP IT! and in our bundle pack, you’ll find game boards for several different phonics patterns.

How to Play:

1-2-3 SPELL IT! is played in a similar fashion as Uno. Each player gets 7 letter cards. The object is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards. The way you get rid of your cards is by playing a letter card from your hand on the game board that will spell a REAL word {only real words are allowed}. Once you’ve spelled the real word, you must read it. Both players must agree that it is indeed a real word! Players take turns in this manner until one player is out of cards. Further directions are on the first page of the download.

1-2-3 SPELL IT!~ A Short Vowel Spelling Game | This Reading MamaIn the deck, I’ve also included these Wild Cards. If a player has a Wild Card in her hand, she may substitute it for any letter {consonant or vowel} to help her create a real word on the board. When a player plays the Wild Card, she must tell what letter the Wild Card represents, then she must read the word created.

1-2-3 Flip it Spell it cover

Is your child ready for more spelling games? Then, you may want to purchase my 1-2-3 FLIP IT! / 1-2-3 SPELL IT! Pack for $2. In this 47-page pack are FLIP IT! and SPELL IT! game boards and cards for:
