Blending Sounds Pack - Sounding Out CVC Words

Blending Sounds – Sounding Out CVC Words Pack

When learners are beginning to sound out words or are struggling with blending sounds in words, it can feel like an uphill battle. As you ask them to sound out a CVC word, they may sound all the way through and then guess a totally unrelated word.

That’s exactly why I created my Blending Sounds Pack! The activities included give learners lots of practice blending sounds in simple, CVC words. Here’s a little peek inside!

The activities included in this 140+ page Blending Sounds Pack are:

  • Blending Sounds Puzzles – Like the puzzles in Learn to Read, learners use the picture to guide them as they put the puzzle back together and blend through the sounds in each word. {in color & blackline}
  • Dab It! Find It! – As learners dab each letter, they sound through the word. They then find and dab the picture that matches the word.
  • Blending Sounds Self-Checking Clip Cards – Learners sound through each word, then clip the picture that matches the word they sounded out. These clip cards can be made self-checking by printing them front to back short ways. {in color & blackline}
  • Blending Strips – Reveal one letter at a time as you unfold the strips. Learners sound through each letter and then check their word with the picture provided. {in color & blackline}
  • Slide & Say Blending Cards – This activity is similar to the blending strips, but no folding is necessary. Just slip cards into a sleeve {construction paper or security envelop will work} and have learners reveal one letter at a time to sound through each word. {color & blackline}
  • Sneaky Snakes Pages – Learners identify the picture, use the scrambled letters on the snake, and write each CVC word.

K-2 Fluency Cards Using Scooping Phrases - This Reading Mama

K-2 Fluency Cards Using Scooping Lines

If you have a learner who is struggling with reading fluency, you’re going to LOVE scooping phrases! Often readers who are not fluent readers struggle in one or more of these areas:
1- word recognition, 2- decoding, 3- phrasing, or 4- expression. These simple fluency cards can help with ALL four areas!

Included in this pack are 5 different levels of fluency cards for K-2 learners.

  • Set 1: PP Dolch Words & CVC Phrases
  • Set 2: PP/P Dolch Words & CVC Sentences
  • Set 3: PP/P Dolch Words & CCVC/CVCC Sentences {blends/digraphs}
  • Set 4: 1st Grade Dolch Words, Silent e {CVCe}, & R-Controlled Sentences
  • Set 5: 2nd Grade Dolch Words & Common Long Vowel Patterns {ai, ay, ee, ea, igh, oa, & oo}

Not only do you have sets 1-5 with the scooping lines, all five sets are included without scooping lines so that you or your learner can draw their own! That’s over 200 fluency cards for K-2 learners! Woohoo!

Want to know how they work? Here’s a step-by-step!

1. Choose the level appropriate for your learner based on the phonics skills and sight words. Hint: It’s better to choose a level that’s too easy than a level that’s too difficult for fluency practice.

2. On the top line, the learner simply reads/says the words. This is his first practice through and is used to make sure he knows how to read all the words. If your learner doesn’t know a word, help him figure it out or tell it to him. Line 1 helps the reader practice word recognition and accuracy.

3. On the 2nd line, the learner traces his finger along the scooping phrase lines under the words.

As he scoops, he groups the phrases together.

K-2 Fluency Cards with Scooping Phrases - This Reading Mama

Example: (She will swim)…(on the ship.) A very slight pause goes in between the word swim and on. Blank fluency cards are included if you choose to scoop the phrases in a different way.

4. On the 3rd line, the learner thinks about expressing emotion and phrasing.

Using the picture, the learner combines emotion and phrasing to read the sentence again.

reading the sentence using phrasing and emotion

The learner may choose to still use scooping phrases with his finger or go without.

emotion picture cards - practice for reading fluency

If a learner has trouble with this, practice expressing various emotions using the emotions chart or model it first.

Beginning Sounds Phonemic Awareness Cards

Beginning Sounds Phonemic Awareness Cards - This Reading Mama

Phonemic awareness is an important skill for readers and writers. It’s the ability to hear individual sounds in words. And when learners can hear each sound, they begin to be able to isolate individual sounds, separate the sounds, and blend the sounds.

Beginning Sounds Phonemic Awareness Cards

The goal with these beginning sounds phonemic awareness cards is to have learners listen for and identify the SOUND(S) they hear, not necessarily give the letter name(s). For example, instead of saying that spoon starts with sp, we want learners to isolate and make the actual sounds of s & p–> /s/-/p/.

It doesn’t hurt if learners also identify the letter names, but this can prove to be rather difficult with words like knife {sounds like n} or wheelbarrow {can sound like just a w}.

For each card, just read the prompt at the top, name each picture, then ask the learner for the beginning sound(s).

Included in this pack are phonemic awareness cards for:

  • Single Initial Consonant & Vowel Sounds
  • Single Initial Consonant & Vowel Sounds
  • L-Blends
  • R-Blends
  • S-Blends
  • Other Blends (tw & qu)
  • Digraphs
  • Consonant Clusters
  • PLUS Blackline Cards for all skills (pp. 52-99)

beginning s-blends phonemic awareness cards - print words on back

The cards can be printed so the words for each picture are on the back. To do this, be sure to open the file with the free, updated Adobe Reader. Once open, click “print on both sides of paper”, making sure you click “flip on the long edge.”  If you miss this step, the answers will be upside down.

Blow & Pop Vocabulary Dot Pages

If you have a tot or a preschooler that you teach, this 24-page Blow & Pop Vocabulary Dot Pages Pack is a quick, no prep way to teach some vocabulary!

Blow and Pop Vocabulary Page - dotting things that are little

Kids can use dot paint {always a favorite with my kids} and “pop” the bubbles on each page after you talk about each picture. Saying, “Pop!” as kids dot the pictures adds a little fun in there, too!

Blow and Pop using crayon instead of dot markers

If you have a child that really likes to color or if you don’t have dot paint, the pictures can be colored instead.

If you want to be able to use these vocabulary dot pages over and over again, slip them into dry erase pockets and use Power Magnets or transparent counters. Or even dry erase marker {I used washable ones with my tot.}

24 Vocabulary Pages Included for these Concepts:

-parts of the body
-things that are big
-things that are usually found outside
-people
-things that are little
-things that are hard
-things people wear
-vehicles
-things you eat
-animals
-things that are usually found inside
-things that are quiet
-things that are hot
-letters
-numbers
-shapes
-things that move slowly
-things that are cold
-silly pictures

Animal Handwriting Pages - This Reading Mama

Animal Alphabet Handwriting Pages

Practice handwriting with the animals from A to Z! These clean and simple handwriting pages provide practice with writing both upper and lowercase letters within the boundaries of 3 lines (two solid lines and dotted middle line).

Learners are challenged to practice writing their letters BIG and small on each page. They’re perfect for preschool or Kindergarten writers!

Included in this pack are:

1. Lowercase Letter Formation Resources – wall charts and simple foldable book {in color and blackline}

lowercase a handwriting a example - can you write it smaller?

2. Uppercase & Lowercase Pages – Separate pages are included for each with an animal that begins with that letter. Each time the learner drops down, the lines are closer together. This gives learners practice writing big and writing smaller.

The learner is given guidance with green dot(s) and arrows on the first time trying each letter. Each line has a support example and then just the green start dot for more tries.

Use pencil and paper OR slip into a plastic sleeve protector and use dry erase marker to make them reusable! {affiliate link included}

If you want to be able to use these vocabulary dot pages over and over again, slip them into dry erase pockets and use Power Magnets or transparent counters. Or even dry erase marker {I used washable ones with my tot.}

24 Vocabulary Pages Included for these Concepts:

-parts of the body
-things that are big
-things that are usually found outside
-people
-things that are little
-things that are hard
-things people wear
-vehicles
-things you eat
-animals
-things that are usually found inside
-things that are quiet
-things that are hot

Blending Sounds – Sounding Out CVC Words Pack

  • Blending Sounds Puzzles – Like the puzzles in Learn to Read, learners use the picture to guide them as they put the puzzle back together and blend through the sounds in each word. {in color & blackline}
  • Dab It! Find It! – As learners dab each letter, they sound through the word. They then find and dab the picture that matches the word.
  • Blending Sounds Self-Checking Clip Cards – Learners sound through each word, then clip the picture that matches the word they sounded out. These clip cards can be made self-checking by printing them front to back short ways. {in color & blackline}
  • Blending Strips – Reveal one letter at a time as you unfold the strips. Learners sound through each letter and then check their word with the picture provided. {in color & blackline}
  • Slide & Say Blending Cards – This activity is similar to the blending strips, but no folding is necessary. Just slip cards into a sleeve {construction paper or security envelop will work} and have learners reveal one letter at a time to sound through each word. {color & blackline}
  • Sneaky Snakes Pages – Learners identify the picture, use the scrambled letters on the snake, and write each CVC word.
